The collision of Eastern and Western cultures: a dialogue between tradition and underground (underground) urban cultural exchange. In the KENZO 2023 autumn and winter series, art director Nigo integrated KENZO’s community culture with his understanding of Japanese culture formed in his personal growth. This autumn and winter campaign was shot in Osaka and Kyoto, presenting the characteristics of the collision of Eastern and Western cultures of the fashion house from multiple angles. By capturing the different scenes of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures in the two cities, it demonstrates the diverse urban characteristics of Osaka and Kyoto: in Osaka, which is as hot as a melting pot, it shows its lively street culture and underground (underground) cultural youth spirit; Kyoto, on the other hand, showcases traditional cultural concepts and the trend of music favored by young people. This series of advertisements is shot by well-known Japanese photographer Keizo Kitajima (Keizo Kitajima) and the famous director Frank Lebon shoots dynamic video images, showing the core of Nigo’s practice in KENZO design – cosmopolitanism, and his style as a Japanese designer In sharp contrast.

Filming in Osaka and Kyoto was carried out under the premise of cross-genre eclecticism of this autumn and winter series. This season presents a functional wardrobe that spans cultures, eras and styles, reflecting the youthful vibrations of Japanese, American and British street culture in the ‘Swinging 60s’. In this campaign, we deeply explore the daily life scenes of young people in two Japanese cities and use this as a framework to interpret the self-expression methods of contemporary Japanese young people: a style dialogue that spans the deconstruction of traditional and modern clothing, a dialogue between the East and the West. A fusion of western wardrobe elements. This campaign invites KENZO brand ambassador – VERNON (Cui Hanshuo), a member of the K-pop boy group SEVENTEEN, and Nigo to make a guest appearance.

In Keizo Kitajima’s street shots, the Japanese photographer captures the daily lives of city dwellers and their environments. British photographer Frank Lebon echoed this concept in the form of moving images, and chose the single “Dreamer” released by the Japanese new wave band Urban Dance in the 1980s as the background music, which was composed by Shinobu Narita ( Shinobu Narita, with lyrics by Minako Yoshida. In the campaign, Nigo plays shogi at Shiseien in Kyoto wearing this season’s iconic Dazzle Stripes collection, which was designed from Kenzo Takada’s brand archives in the 1980s. The filming locations of the campaign in Osaka include Jan Jan Yokocho Izakaya, New Star Game Hall, Tai Yoshi Hyakuban, Universe Yokocho Izakaya, Shinsekai Yakitori, American Village Mitsui Kaikan, Kinryu Ramen Restaurant and Namba Bears Theater ; while the scenic spots in Kyoto include the bamboo forest of Daikakuji Temple, the Kamo River, the viewing platform of Qinglong Temple and Shecheng Garden.
