Artificial intelligence: why France has changed its tone on regulation

It was just over a year ago. Unlike today, France was not then on the front line to defend the self-regulation of companies behind generative artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT.

Long months before the conclusion of the European negotiations on the “AI Act” scheduled for this Wednesday, December 6, France even acted in the opposite way, by pointing out a blind spot in the draft regulation on AI proposed to Brussels. Guardrails were then provided for use by use. But nothing had been thought of for multitasking AIs. “When it wrote its text, the European Commission did not have general AI systems in mind,” lamented an advisor to the French executive.
