Assassination attempt on Pakistan’s first transgender news anchor

No matter how much the world is progressing, the transgender community is still being attacked in many parts of the world. Yesterday there was an assassination attempt on Pakistan’s first transgender news anchor.

26-year-old Marvia Malik was attacked outside her residence in Lahore. Two men shot at Marvia when she was returning from the pharmacy. The incident happened on Thursday night. Marviya told the police that for working for the country’s transgender community, she receives constant threats. Marvia also said that threatening calls often come from unknown numbers.

Marvia had reached Lahore for the surgery but was shifted out of Lahore due to security concerns. In 2018, Marvia made history as Pakistan’s first transgender news anchor. Marvia revealed that she had to face many challenges in her life. Marvia also said that she did not get any support from home. Marvia had also said that she would do everything possible to ensure the acceptance of society for the people of her community.

In 2018, Pakistan’s parliament approved a bill to protect transgender people from sexual and physical assault and harassment. Earlier this month, the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights had replaced the word transgender with the word intersex in the 2018 Act.
