Christian, a 50-year-old resident of the Herve region, faces a 30-month prison sentence before the Liège Court of Appeal for raping a 16-year-old girl who was running away. The latter was particularly vulnerable since she had been placed in an institution by the judge for her own protection.
In June 2018, when she was supposed to go to a summer camp, she preferred to run away. She ended up at the suspect’s house with a friend. She explained that the defendant had added her on Facebook. She returned to his home and he allegedly took the opportunity to rape her. She came back to the place again, but accompanied by her mother. He offered her money to start over and offered her a swimming pool in an attempt to buy her sexual favors. The 50-year-old exchanged compromising messages with the teenager.
A pecuniary motive?
She notably told him that she wanted to come home, but he had to promise her that nothing sexual would happen, that he wouldn’t kiss her. She also pointed out to him that it was pedophilia, to which he replied that he knew. That he was going to jail. He called her cabbage and told her that he loved her. On July 15, 2018, the young girl went to the police station with her mother. She filed four sheets on which she explained the behavior of the person concerned.
The man denies the facts. The Verviers criminal court sentenced him to 24 months in prison with a partial reprieve. This time, the public prosecutor’s office opposed any measure of clemency. “On Facebook, she wrote that she was 19,” explained the defendant. “She never came to my house alone.” For the compromising messages, the defendant declared that he had not written them. “Sometimes I lend my phone. She asked me for money.” The defense attorney pointed out that his client was mentally retarded. The lawyer also believed that the girl had filed a complaint in order to obtain money. The court will make its decision in October.
