Assessing Karl-Anthony Towns’ Claim of Revolutionizing the NBA: Fact or Fiction?

2023-06-16 11:21:00

Self-proclaimed “the best inside shooter in the history of basketball”, Karl-Anthony Towns is never afraid to come out with big statements to put himself forward. New proof in recent days, when KAT thought he was a revolutionary.

It was on the podcast of his former Wolves teammate Patrick Beverley that Charles-Antoine continued his self-promotion tour. Here is the last nugget of the guy. Spoiler, there’s something to laugh about.

“That’s how I see things. When it’s time to hang up my sneakers and I retire, people will say I changed the game. When it’s all over, kids will come into the League and be able to play in a different way because of my way to play in the NBA.”

Genuine question. I genuinely would like y’all to explain to me. What did Karl Anthony Towns change about the NBA? pic.twitter.com/vAJBGt86pE

Karl-Anthony Towns would therefore have… changed the game? Without disrespecting the man, we weren’t really aware.

If there’s one guy who’s truly changed the game since KAT came to the NBA in 2015, it’s Stephen Curry and no one else. And if there is an insider who arrived in the League that year who can claim revolutionary status one day, it will undoubtedly be Nikola Jokic. So yes, Towns is an exceptional offensive talent, one of the best shooters we’ve seen among the big men as well as a good passer, but what exactly did he do to change the NBA game?

I can’t believe Towns said that.

Interiors that deviate to plant at 3-point, we have seen before KAT. Mobile big men capable of scoring in different ways, outside and inside, that’s not new either. Charles-Antoine may have all the qualities of the modern interior in attack, but that does not mean that the next generation will look to imitate him and hope to become like him. Because for that, to boast of having “changed the game”, you must already have changed the trajectory of your own franchise, to push the rest of the League to take inspiration from it. And at this level, for the moment, it is poor. Very poor.

Karl-Anthony Towns, despite his career average of 23 points and 11 rebounds, has yet to win a playoff series with Wolves. Worse, in the postseason, he showed his limits several times (drop in scoring, bad offensive choices, problems with faults in defense…), showing in particular a terribly frustrating softness for a guy of 2m13 and 112 kilos. KAT defenders, if any, will say he hasn’t been helped by injuries in recent years and has fallen to a dysfunctional franchise in Minnesota, but that doesn’t change the fact that his statement stands finds itself quite high on the scale of stupidity.

Karl-Anthony Towns: less stupid statements, more basketball please.

Undeniable talent, the guy could beat everyone offensively. But the talk/production ratio is appalling.

As much as I pray for a full season of madness from him, he might as well stuff it.

You understood, Karl-Anthony Towns had better remain discreet behind the microphones and focus on the upcoming season with Minnesota. Author of only 29 games this year and eliminated once again in the first round of the Playoffs, KAT must come back strong to allow Wolves to achieve the jump hoped for with the addition of Rudy Gobert at his side and the presence of Anthony Edwards (who is, by the way, the TRUE franchise player for Wolves).
