Recently sold by Intel, the “NUC” Mini-PCs will now sail under the Asus flag. In an interview with the specialist site The Register, the vice-president of the group says more about its strategy and objectives in this area.

What should we expect with Asus taking over the “NUC” (for “Next Unit of Computing”) Mini-PCs previously developed and marketed by Intel? Some first elements of response come to us, following an interview between Jacky Hsu, vice-president of the Taiwanese manufacturer, and The Register. We learn in particular that the brand would intend to significantly diversify the concept of NUC, so as to offer relevant solutions, both for the general public, as well as for businesses or professional users.

As it stands, Asus would be banking on a more flexible design of the NUCs, so as to adapt them to as many scenarios as possible: embedded use, industrial uses, digital display, use at points of sale, for the cloud, AI or even within warehouses and factories. So many contexts for which Asus would like to have a NUC ready to use. And to do this, the company would be ready to evolve their from-factor.

Asus would like to have an NUC to offer to every type of customer

We discover in particular that the brand would, for example, be able to offer NUCs equipped with personalized connectors. As pointed out PC Gamerwe can therefore imagine that Asus would be willing to provide its customers with NUCs equipped with different Ethernet standards, SFP, D-SUB, Serial, DIN connections, etc., depending on the needs and volumes ordered.

In terms of NUCs dedicated this time to the general public, and more precisely to gamers, Asus remains a little more discreet for the moment. That said, KW Chao, general manager of the NUC branch of Asus, has already indicated that NUCs marketed under the aegis of the ROG range were under study. It is also speculated that the latter could benefit from Intel’s future Meteor Lake chips – which will only be distributed on already assembled devices.

A particularly attractive avenue if it were to take shape since these chips would offer the new Asus Mini-PCs particularly interesting energy efficiency and solid performance. Adding a dedicated graphics card to the set would then make it possible to obtain a powerful NUC, very agile in gaming, and yet compact and silent. A dream probably within Asus’ reach.
