Our future could become cyberpunk or utopia, and the designs of this gaming phone depict those possibilities.

Game accessories and peripherals have an unspoken rule about what are considered standard design rules. The predominantly black body is punctuated by RGB lights that shine like neon signs on a dark night. If you think about cyberpunk settings, it’s very close to the aesthetic that most gaming products embrace. Of course, there are other ways of looking at our future, which include the hope expressed for cleaner, brighter designs. This aesthetic division is most evident in the new gaming phone from ASUS Republic of Gamers, which describes the phone as ditching its cyberpunk roots and venturing into an even more expansive world of the future.

Designer: ASUS

ASUS ROG Phone 6 comes with two main designs divided between professional and non-professional models. While ASUS describes both as high-end styles, this is actually only seen in one of the two. The ASUS ROG Phone 6 still carries many design cues from the previous generations, especially its black color. Most of the shapes and lines on the back are asymmetrical and curved, creating a visual buzz that exudes energy and exoticism. Its RGB dot matrix display is a blast from the past, typical of cyberpunk aesthetics.

In contrast, the ROG Phone 6 Pro only comes in a “Storm White” version, and it makes a sharp turn from the previous aesthetic, heading towards a fanciful space-centric vision of the future. The lines are clean, the geometric shapes are more balanced, and there’s not much in the way of distracting noise and detail. A new color screen on the side of the phone capable of displaying full-fledged images and animations, reminiscent of the fictional HUDs in science fiction. The phone’s components have matching trims with mostly white bodies, a few black panels and a splash of RGB color here and there.

Despite the futuristic look, the ASUS ROG Phone 6 is pretty old school in some ways, which isn’t really a bad thing. High-end phones these days still have the extinct headphone jack. Instead of a notch or a high-end camera at the bottom of the screen, the phone has regular, narrow bezels on the top and bottom. This comes with the advantage of having some ‘dead space’ for the holder’s palm when playing a game in landscape orientation. Of course, the same arms will also include a headphone jack, so many gamers may opt for Bluetooth headphones at that point.

In terms of hardware, the ASUS ROG Phone 6 is pretty much what you’d expect for a phone designed and built for gaming. Its real test will be in its thermal management, which will determine how long the processor can maintain its performance. Design-wise, the phone may mark a new stage for portable gaming devices, adopting a clean aesthetic that seems to be growing in the broader gaming market if modern console and PC designs are what needs to be done.
