ASUS ROG Phone 8 and 8 Pro: The Ultimate Guide to 2024’s Gaming Smartphones

2024 begins with the most sophisticated gaming machines.

Tonight, January 9, ASUS presented a completely rethought line of gaming smartphones ASUS ROG Phone 8. It included two devices: ROG Phone 8 and ROG Phone 8 Pro. The models are seriously different from the previous generation both in terms of design and characteristics. Now these are even more flagship devices with shameless cameras.

The first thing that catches your eye is the changed design of the smartphone. An asymmetrical pentagonal block of cameras appeared at the back. The glowing ASUS logo remains in place. In front, instead of a screen with thick symmetrical frames, there is now a display with thin edges and a central cutout for the front camera. Smartphones have become thinner: 163.8 x 76.8 mm (the previous model had 173.0 x 77.0 mm).

They also worked on the photo capabilities – a triple camera is installed with a main 50 MP Sony IMX890 module, a wide-angle 13 MP and a telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The main camera supports 6-axis optical stabilization. The 32 MP selfie camera received an increased viewing angle from 73 to 90 degrees.

Specifications of ASUS ROG Phone 8 and 8 Pro:

  • Screen: 6.78 inches, 20:9, 2400 x 1080, 1-120 Hz, up to 165 Hz, HDR10+, brightness up to 2500 nits, AMOLED, Gorilla Glass Victus 2;
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3;
  • Memory: up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, up to 1 TB of UFS 4.0 ROM;
  • Cameras: main 50 MP, wide 13 MP, telephoto 32 MP, front 32 MP;
  • Battery: 5500 mAh, fast charging 65 W, wireless 15 W;
  • Dimensions: 163.8 x 76.8 x 8.9 mm, 225 g;

ASUS ROG Phone 8 and 8 Pro are the world’s first gaming smartphones protected from water and dust according to the IP68 standard.

The ROG Phone 8 Pro version differs from the basic ROG Phone 8 only in the body colors and the glowing logo on the back panel. The basic version has RGB backlighting, while the firm version has black and white pixel backlighting.

Both smartphones received two USB-C ports: the main one and the side one for games. There are side touch buttons for shooters, an advanced cooling system and support for branded coolers.
