If Republic of Gamers is the prestige brand in the world of Asus PC gamers, TUF is its more down-to-earth bent. It is an emblem that has made off-road resistance its trademark on the manufacturer’s communication side, but consumers would especially highlight their more accessible prices. But to reach this last point, it is necessary to make some difficult choices. So the question is always: have the right choices been made this year?

Asus TUF Gaming A15 (TUF507N) Design

The aesthetic language of TUF Gaming machines hasn’t totally changed this year. The orientation of the design elements is vertical, as if the computer had to be presented like a book, but apart from that, we remain on elements that are always very pragmatic.

We therefore have a machine that relies above all on plastic, even if it is of very good quality. The screen part like the body of the device does not bend excessively under the blows, and we feel the solidity of the whole. It is especially on the side of the thickness and the weight of the machine that we see the difference with the more upscale products: at 2.2kg on the scale and 2.49cm thick, its 15-inch format allows it to fit in all bags, but it is not a computer that you will carry around nonchalantly without thinking about it. Especially considering its big 230W power supply.

In absolute terms, it’s a pragmatic gaming PC. It is there to deliver its performance while maintaining good durability. And if this last point is difficult to measure, the general construction of the product gives us confidence.

Keyboard and touchpad

This is a point on which Asus did not harm us. We are certainly on a classic keyboard, and not the Cherry MX that can be seen on other larger diagonal gamer configurations, but these are very well made. In addition to appreciating the transparent ZQSDs which give a certain gamer charm to the whole, the keys are well spaced out, have a fairly wide activation distance for this type of product, and the numeric keypad remains pleasant to use despite its reduced dimensions.

As for the touchpad, there’s not much to report. Its diagonal is not the biggest, which is forgivable on this format, but the glide is excellent.

connectors

We can find on the left of the machine, located very low on the cabin, the classic 240W power port, a full-size Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a USB-C 4.0 port supporting a bandwidth of 40 Gb / s (Thunderbolt 3 equivalent), a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port and a combo jack. On the right is a single USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, also located very low on the chassis.

The connection is rather well provided here, and we especially appreciate the presence of a 40 Gbps compatible USB-C port. However, we would have liked both to be, especially against competitors under Intel who do not hesitate on this point. In pure functional terms, it would certainly have been good to position some of its ports on the back of the device, the thickness of the Gaming TUF A15 accommodating this solution well.

Webcam et audio

The 2023 Asus TUF Gaming A15 chooses to integrate a simple 720p webcam into its model, in addition to two small speakers located at the bottom of the chassis. To be honest, both are far from impressive, and you can feel that some savings have been made here. It’s not terrible, but at the same time, all the manufacturers on this market make essentially the same choices. It is therefore difficult to judge Asus for this.

Asus TUF Gaming A15 (TUF507N) Écran

Our 2023 TUF Gaming A15 is equipped with a single 15.6-inch diagonal IPS LCD panel in the traditional 16:0 ratio. What sets it apart is its compatibility with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz and its Nvidia G-Sync certification, in addition to its anti-reflective coating. The manufacturer promises 100% coverage of the S-RGB space.

Under our probe and with the DisplayCal software, we find a coverage of 95.2% of the volume of the sRGB gamut, for 67.4% of that of DCI-P3. The maximum brightness was measured at 299 cd / m², which is sufficient indoors, but difficult to read in direct sunlight, and certainly not enough for HDR. However, we find a very high contrast ratio of 1566:1, perfect for an IPS LCD panel.

In terms of calibration, Asus has not missed its baby. If limited to sRGB, its average E2000 delta for that color space is 1.36, with the maximum deviation at just 2.36. It’s all good. Alas, the panel really won’t go beyond sRGB, even with a manual calibration. For the gamers that the Asus TUF Gaming A15 is targeting, however, this is more than enough.

Asus TUF Gaming A15 (TUF507N) Logiciel

We find once again the couple MyAsus and Armory Crate on a gamer configuration from Asus. The first is the basic software allowing to update its drivers, when the second is the one allowing to more finely adjust the power of the device and the color type settings of the keyboard LEDs.

If MyAsus is starting to show its age, and the advertisements are displayed a little too much, it still does its job. For its part, Armory Crate remains one of the best gamer interfaces available on the market, thanks to its ease of use and its efficiency. The competition is not tough on this ground, but it remains a point in favor of the manufacturer.

Asus TUF Gaming A15 (TUF507N) Performances

Our test model is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, an 8-core, 16-thread SoC that can turbo up to 4.7 GHz. It is coupled with 16 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, but above all, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card with a TGP of 140W and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. On paper, this is more than enough for the definition targeted here, namely 1080p.

Theoretical benchmarks

AMD still does not disappoint on multi-threaded processes. On Cinebench R23, we find 13,744 points in multi-core and 1,523 points in single-core, scores which are indeed those expected on this type of configuration. The same goes for the 7182 points found on PCMark 10. The real disappointment comes from the 512 GB storage space, which with its score of 1821 MB/s in writing is far from truly showing the performance of the PCIe 4.0 bus which he occupies. We are closer to previous generations here in terms of performance.

Benchmark gaming

The mobile RTX 4060 performs better than you might think. If DLSS 3 necessarily allows you to boost the performance of the latest big AAA games a little more. Without even seeking the help of these technologies, we find an average 30 FPS on Cyberpunk 2077, a game that is still very greedy. But above all, we can see that Hogwarts Legacy always arrives at 45 FPS with the raytracing pushed to the max. The same goes for Miles Morales at 60 FPS, which underlines how NVIDIA’s third-generation RT cores manage to readapt on more modest chips.

For more common experiences, we can see that Diablo IV quietly exceeds 150 FPS without even calling on DLSS 3, even if the latter does not reach double the FPS as technology tends to promise. On Street Fighter 6, a game whose gameplay logic absolutely needs a stable 60 FPS, we keep it all quietly with the graphics pushed to the maximum.

Cooling and noise

Considering the rising temperatures of this summer period, the maximum 51°C measured on the chassis are excellent for this Asus TUF Gaming A15 from 2023 pushed to its maximum. The cooling system works perfectly well to support the performance of the machine.

On the other hand… The fans are noisy. Without going towards the takeoff of the helicopter, the mixing of air is there and is quite audible. We can get used to it, but for comfort, a helmet is recommended in game.

Asus TUF Gaming A15 (TUF507N) Autonomie

The 2023 Asus TUF Gaming A15 is equipped with a large 90 Wh battery. This is recharged through a rather thick 240W power supply, but the computer is also compatible with USB-C Power Delivery charging. However, you will necessarily have to use the basic power supply to be able to take full advantage of the performance of the device.

Autonomy is not really a point on which we expect PC gamers at the turn, and the Asus TUF Gaming A15 does not change the usual. We can find between 5 and 6 hours of office use on the machine, which corresponds to a good afternoon of work without being able to exceed all that. This is the average of what we find on PC gamers, so there is really nothing to see on this ground.
