Based on the data published by EL.STAT. in the containment of inflation in January compared to December the main reason was the low energy prices.

In particular, the price of natural gas recorded an annual decrease of 80.2%, which led the price of electricity to have a marginal decrease of 0.4%. Prices for liquid fuels and lubricants recorded a decrease of 3.5%, although heating oil recorded a marginal price increase of 1.3% and solid fuels (firewood pellets) recorded an increase of 8.6%.

However, the big problem remains in food, which continues to squeeze family budgets with an increase of 8.3%, multiples of average inflation. The “gold” in food price appreciation goes to olive oil, which despite being one of Greece’s main export goods recorded an increase of 67.4% in January. Seasonal items come next on the list of price increases.

Fresh vegetables recorded an increase in their prices by 14.4% and fruits 14.2%, mineral waters, soft drinks and juices recorded an increase of 11.7%, fish 77%, meats, chocolates, sweets and sugar and served soft drinks had a 6% price increase, other food had a 5.8% price increase, coffee, cocoa and tea had a 5.0% price increase, while only in bread and cereals had increases less than average inflation at 2%.

Large increases were recorded in pharmaceuticals (12.7%), health insurance premiums (14%), air passenger transportation (11.7%), package holidays (9.3%), theater tickets and cinemas (7.9%), restaurants, patisseries, canteens (6.9%) and secondary education fees.
