At a “burning” price for 4 hours… beds for rent on planes

How many times have you been sleepy on a plane and failed to fall asleep because of a tight seat, or a back that doesn’t go back far enough?

New Zealand’s national airline decided to provide a unique solution for its passengers, by allowing them to “rent” a bed to sleep on during the flight.

What is the nature of the new service?

  • “Air New Zealand” announced that it will provide its passengers on board the eight new “Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner” aircraft, beds to sleep for 4 hours, in two-storey cabins that can accommodate 6 people, known as “Sky Nest”.
  • The beds are very close together but each has a curtain for some privacy for those sleeping on it.
  • According to the company, each “cabin” will include a pillow, sheets and a blanket, and these items will be changed between different users, 30 minutes between sessions.
  • Air New Zealand said: “The lights will come on softly at the end of each session, and the crew will politely wake up sleeping passengers.”
  • The service is available to Economy Class passengers, who often struggle due to tight spaces between seats.
  • Bed reservations will only be available from September 2024.

“Rent” terms

According to the airline, passengers will only be allowed to reserve one session per flight for a period of 4 hours, and the bed can be used by one member of a family in the session, meaning that it cannot be rotated among its members.

The cabins will appear for the first time on long-haul flights, from Oakland to New York and Oakland to Chicago, that take more than 15 hours.

The company’s eight new “Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner” aircraft will arrive in the country in 2024, according to the British newspaper “The Guardian”.
