At least 1,460 political prisoners in Belarus – Belarus

Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Byalyatski, founder of the human rights organization Vyazna, was sentenced to several years in prison along with three other members. In February, Poland closed a key border crossing with Belarus in response to the conviction of a Polish journalist. After announcing his candidacy in the 2020 presidential election, Sergei Tikhanovsky was arrested. His wife Svetlana Tichanovskaya ran in his place in the elections. She was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for “conspiracy to seize power”. The list of political prisoners in Belarus might go on forever – and more people are joining it every day.
