At least five dead in explosion at Taiwanese factory

An explosion at a factory in southern Taiwan has killed at least five people and injured more than 100 others. The explosion occurred on Friday evening in Pingtung County following authorities said a fire broke out at a golf equipment manufacturer’s factory. According to the state-run Central News Agency (CNA) on Saturday, the fatalities include three firefighters and a factory worker.

Five people were also trapped in the rubble, it said. Dozens of injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment, some of whose lives were in danger, according to media reports.

Part of the factory building is said to have collapsed in the explosion. The cause of the fire and subsequent explosion remains under investigation, authorities said.

In the capital Taipei on Saturday, both President Tsai Ing-wen and Prime Minister Chen Chien-jen expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased. Tsai and Chen planned to visit the accident site in southern Taiwan later in the day.
