at the end of 2021 the hotels have not returned to their pre-Covid attendance

Between October and December 2021, attendance at collective tourist accommodation excluding campsites was thus 8.6% lower than its level in the last quarter of 2019.

Hotel attendance had not yet returned to its pre-crisis level in the last quarter of last year, in the absence of around a third of foreign tourists who came to visit the territory during this period in 2019, indicates the Insee.

From October to December 2021, attendance in collective tourist accommodation excluding campsites, expressed in number of nights, was thus 8.6% lower than its level in the last quarter of 2019, i.e. before the Covid-19 pandemic, specifies the organization in its note on the situation published on Friday.

This decline in attendance is more marked (-12.4%) in hotels than in other collective tourist accommodation: these exceeded their pre-crisis level (+2.9%).

Belgians have returned to pre-Covid levels

While the number of overnight stays by customers residing in France is approaching its pre-crisis level (-3%), that of non-resident tourists remains in sharp decline (-32.6%). For customers from the United Kingdom, hotel nights have been halved compared to before the crisis “in a context marked by health restrictions governing travel between countries and by Brexit”, notes INSEE. .

The decline is 15% for German customers, while Belgians have returned to pre-Covid levels. Among the categories, the frequentation of high-end hotels (4 or 5 stars), penalized by the absence of foreign customers, remains down 11% compared to 2019, still in the last quarter of 2021, against a decline of 6.9 % for 3 stars and -16% for 1 or 2 stars and -25.2% for unclassified hotels.

“In both cases, the decline is the result of both the heavy drop in attendance by non-residents and the pronounced decline in attendance by resident customers,” comments INSEE.

Île-de-France is still affected, with hotel occupancy which “is far from having regained its pre-crisis level”: it shows a decline of 21.1% and even 27.3% for the business customers, against a 2% drop for the coast.
