The summer is barely over, but the emergency doctors are already advancing, at the beginning of September, the results of a very complicated summer period, to call for strong political action.
One out of two emergency services operated in a degraded manner in July-August, with at least one “medical line” – or a doctor – less, according to the survey unveiled by the SAMU-Urgences de France union on Wednesday, September 6. This brought together the responses of doctors from nearly 300 establishments, almost half of the emergency care offer. Another remarkable figure: 163 services have closed “at least occasionally” between 1is July and August 31, for lack of sufficient human resources. And this, in sixty departments. Rural, urban, tourist areas… these closures are distributed over the territory in a heterogeneous way, underlines the union, and this can be one night, or several, even continuously (day and night). They symbolize, for the union, “the failure of a system that is no longer able to offer the population access to local, quality and secure care”.
The alert coming from many territories concerning the SMUR, these mobile emergency and resuscitation services comprising a doctor, a nurse, a driver and a medical vehicle, sent in situations of vital distress, is confirmed. Of the 233 SMURs who responded to the survey – more than half of them – nearly two-thirds (70%) reported closures, again in around sixty departments. A new symptom, by its scale, of a crisis which now affects “response to vital emergency”denounces the union.
Did caregivers, patients, have a worse summer in 2023 than in 2022? The answer pits health actors against government. “We have to stop pretending that things went well., argues the “boss” of SAMU-Urgences de France, Marc Noizet, who sounded the alarm at the start of the summer.
