President Alberto Fernández spoke yesterday at the G20 Summit, although the richest part of his visit to India were the meetings he had with other international leaders such as his counterpart from the United States, Joe Biden, and with the head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina. Georgieva.

Fernández was the first to speak at the first session of the G20 Summit, called “One Earth.” There he proposed the integration of Celac into the G20 and questioned the IMF for clinging “to its dogmas and showing itself incapable of new solutions.”

He also targeted Russia for prolonging the invasion of Ukraine, and condemned “financial speculation, restrictions, blockades and trade barriers.” Before the meeting, the President shared a few moments with the rest of his global colleagues in an anteroom of the main hall. That was the moment when he crossed paths with Georgieva where they spoke “at length” about the situation of the International Monetary Fund.

According to what was reported from the presidential environment, the head of the organization recognized that the staff often ends up making decisions that have nothing to do with the convenience of either the United States or the rest of the world, and she trusted that it could be solved in the future. She also said that starting in November the debate about surcharges will resume. These are additional interest payments that the IMF imposes on heavily indebted borrowing countries, including Argentina, according to the size and repayment time of their loans. In the same context, Alberto Fernández shared a conversation with Biden, they asked each other about the first ladies and there was a colloquial dialogue. But later they crossed paths again and chatted about matters more linked to politics.

Fernández thanked Biden for his country’s intervention before the IMF to achieve the latest disbursement of US$ 7.5 billion for Argentina (5.5 billion SDR).

“We did everything possible,” the US president told Fernández, according to what official sources told Télam who recognize that “there was a real concern on the part of the US to help” the Argentine government on this issue.

Biden also asked him about Javier Milei, asking: “Who is that character who appeared in Argentina?” The response came from spokesperson Gabriela Cerruti, who told him that: “He is the same one who is now looking in the United States for a photo with Donald Trump.”

Alberto Fernández also held bilateral meetings with his colleagues from Korea, Bangladesh and the three countries that join the Brics such as Argentina, which are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. The list of meetings will be completed this Sunday with a meeting with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

Message criticizing the Fund

Alberto Fernández proposed the integration of Celac into the G20, questioned the IMF for clinging to “its dogmas and showing itself incapable of new solutions”, criticized the prolongation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and condemned “financial speculation, restrictions, blockades and trade barriers.” He stated this when speaking at the first session of the G20 summit, called “One Earth”, in New Delhi.

“I welcome the incorporation of the African Union into this G20. It is a profoundly fair act that allows us to know and attend to the needs of that wonderful continent. I hope that in the future the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which faces problems similar to those faced by Africa, can join this forum,” said Fernández.

“The Global South exists and many of the countries that make it up suffer from indebted economies due to the conditions imposed by the international financial system that we so often criticize,” he said.

After mentioning that Argentina suffered the “worst drought in the last hundred years,” Fernández said that the country suffered “a drop in exports equivalent to three points of our GDP,” with which “climate change altered all our plans.”

“The IMF, to which we are indebted, clung to its dogmas and proved incapable of innovating with new solutions to confront the catastrophe,” he questioned.
