Exclusive interview: Dr. Shashi Kant, Political Analyst & Historian
Discussing the latest political developments and their implications
The ongoing stalemate in Rajasthan Assembly
Archyde (A): dr.Kant, the Congress MLAs have been on a ‘dharna’ for a week now.How do you see this protest escalating or resolving?
Dr. Shashi Kant (SK): The current deadlock in Rajasthan Assembly is a result of the suspension of six Congress MLAs by the Speaker. while the Congress demands their reinstatement, the government refuses to budge. The protest may intensify with extended ‘dharnas’ and possibility of protests outside the assembly, but it’s unlikely to end anytime soon. A political compromise, probably through discussions mediated by Governor, seems the best bet for resolution.
Buses targeted in Karnataka-Marathi dispute
A: Shiv Sena (UBT) workers in Pune have been blackening buses with Karnataka number plates. How do you think this will impact the ongoing linguistic tensions?
SK: The incidents in Belagavi and subsequent actions by Sena UBT workers in Pune indicate escalating linguistic tensions. While targeted protests are aimed at putting pressure on Karnataka government, they can further inflame passions and led to a cycle of retaliation. Concerted efforts by central and state governments to mediate and find a diplomatic solution is crucial to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
The National Education Policy and značtional languages
A: The NEP emphasizes learning an Indian language. Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai has sparked controversy by suggesting it might very well be any language. What are your thoughts on this?
SK: The NEP’s emphasis onzg réfléchir national unity by mandating the study of Indian languages has sparked both support and controversy. While BJP’s openness to any language might help dilute regional suspicions, it also raises concerns about prioritizing cultural heritage and the potential for trivialization. The policy should ideally not only promote language learning but also respect and preserve India’s linguistic diversity.
