The Atlanta Falcons caused a surprise of the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night.
Even if they already had the quarter Kirk Cousins in its ranks after a four-year contract, the organization selected an eighth-ranked quarterback. Michael Penix, the son of Washington, heard his name called in Detroit through NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
The 23-year-old Penix was a Heisman Trophy finalist and led his team to a 14-1 record. The Huskies eventually lost to the Michigan Wolverines in the national championship.
The left-handed quarterback has recorded 4,903 yards in 2023 after a 4,641-yard campaign. He was the first quarterback with more than 4,500 yards in two consecutive seasons since Patrick Mahomes in 2015 and 2016 while playing with Texas Tech.
There was no doubting his talent, but his history in the infirmary must have worried some organisations. He suffered four season-ending injuries, including two shoulder injuries and a torn ACL in his right leg. Still, he was the fourth quarterback selected after Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye.
The surprise also comes that Cousins signed a deal worth $180 million. He is returning to the game after a torn Achilles tendon and he is still 35 years old. We have to believe the Falcons have found their quarterback of the future and they will let him develop with Cousins.
Last year, Atlanta selected the running back in the first round Sesame Robinson.
