Atlas Fallen: A Disappointing RPG with Potential in Action Gameplay and Exploration

In the “Dissenting Opinion” section, the authors express only their own opinion, which may not coincide with the opinion of the editors (or may coincide). They are free to do it as they like and in any format convenient for themselves. Everything is possible here. Role-playing action Atlas Fallen initially seemed to me a game, albeit small, but attractive. Everything looked pretty simple, landscapes and monsters were not surprising, and yet there was still hope for an exciting gameplay. With dynamics both in movement and in battles. So when publisher Focus Entertainment offered to evaluate the game, it was decided to give it a chance. After playing Atlas Fallen for several hours (yes, I didn’t finish the game to the end – although it is quite small), I’m ready to share my impressions. Far from the most pleasant. Atlas Fallen greets us with a short prologue and a character editor often found in role-playing games. More precisely, another nameless hero, who somehow got bored looking at the night, and he decided to prove himself. We meet the protagonist in the evening camp, near the fire. Here, one group of people, without any rights, serves another: armed and aggressive. And, of course, the hero is among the offended and oppressed. So a full-fledged conflict is within easy reach. And this whole story unfolds in a fantasy world with gods and demons, with other realities, with ancient buildings and magic. So – an amazing miracle – something strange soon happens to our hero. He receives a powerful artifact that gives him extraordinary strength and agility. And also making the protagonist a master of sports in sand racing. It’s just that we now command this very sand and are able to move with acceleration along this surface both up and down. As an RPG, Atlas Fallen is insanely straightforward and boring. Flat characters, no roleplaying, and no one has heard of any significant choice here. You have assignments. You are free to do them (or not do them) in any order. Upgrade your hero and his skills. And also sometimes choose replicas when talking to NPCs. In that sense, Atlas Fallen came out at a very bad time… The game is far more enjoyable as an action game. And it’s not just the combat system that pleases. Yes, it is quite dynamic and does not let you fall asleep completely, but how simple it is! The main blow, additional blow, parry and special abilities… If you press the button in time, the enemy is frozen and exposed to the blow. If you are under attack, renewable first-aid kits are at your service. However, in fairness, I note that over time, the enemies become stronger (and this saves from boredom), and we will be able to beat them in different parts of the “body”. Some of them are subject to mandatory destruction, while others await you with an additional reward. The monsters won’t let you stand in one place. You have to move on the ground, and jump-fly, attacking enemies in the air. If the enemy turned out to be too tough for you, it is better to retreat. Because, exploring the world, you may well find yourself in extremely dangerous places … And it was the exploration of the world that seemed to me the most interesting part of Atlas Fallen. Yes, there is a lot of sand here. Yes, the locations are relatively small. Yes, there is no particular variety of landscapes, and it’s better not to look into the distance (where it’s impossible to get to) at all … But how nice it is to climb somewhere up, onto another tower! Or find secret paths, treasures and secrets! Or, noticing something strange, come up and start testing speed and dexterity in a minute. Such little things. And yet so pleasant. And it’s not even about side quests, which are terribly primitive. Almost as primitive as the main ones, but the latter at least move the plot forward. No. It just happens that you go and see something strange ahead – and decide to see what the developers decided to hide there. Maybe there will be something of value there. Or diaries, NPC notes. And even animals that can lead you to something valuable. Unless, of course, they get stuck in the textures. We will have to travel the world (at least initially) on our own two feet, but, fortunately, the developers have provided for acceleration. With his help, we become a kind of sandboarder. True, no board. And we rush towards adventures, jumping-flying over stones, enemies or small cliffs. Trying to make our smooth movement continue without delay even for an extra second. Maybe Atlas Fallen really just got unlucky with the release time. It is difficult to leave a strong positive impression when such large and expected games have just been released, and even more various projects are ahead. And role-playing, and with action, and with fantastic fantasy elements … Now the novelty is simply felt gray. Sometimes it causes FPS drops. Sometimes he demonstrates bugs… But the main thing – almost always – makes you want to quickly complete the next task, turn off the game and do something really interesting.
