Atmospheric River Brings Intense Rainfall to Northern Italy From Monday

An atmospheric river is expected to bring intense rainfall to northern Italy starting Monday, November 9, 2026, with the Lombardy region set to be affected by the worsening conditions. According to forecasts from Meteored Italia, accumulations could exceed 100 millimeters in Liguria, high Tuscany, and western Emilia-Romagna.

The approaching weather system, driven by Atlantic depressions and moist south-westerly currents, will bring widespread precipitation to the Center-North from Monday through Thursday, November 12. While the Lombardy area, including Milan, is anticipated to be impacted, current forecasts do not predict accumulations above 100 millimeters specifically for Milan or the southeastern Milan area.

Weather Patterns This Weekend

The weekend of November 7 and 8 will see mostly cloudy skies across much of Italy. Weak light rain is expected between Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, with brief showers in Calabria and the Tyrrhenian Sicily. Sunday may bring clear spells to the Center-North and the Alps. In the Po Valley, minimum temperatures will generally range from 4 to 6 degrees, with no widespread frost. Maximum temperatures in the North will be between 12 and 14 degrees. For Milan and the southeastern part of the province, the weekend is expected to be calm despite frequent cloud cover.

Rainfall Expected from Monday

On Monday, November 9, cloud cover will increase, with the first light rain expected in the North. By Tuesday, November 10, precipitation may extend to the Po Valley, the Apennines, and central regions. Lombardy will also be affected by the passing disturbance, though the distribution of rainfall requires further updates.

Intensifying Conditions by Thursday

Wednesday, November 11, will be gray and humid, with precipitation mainly affecting the Apennines exposed to the south-west and the western Alps, with snow at higher altitudes. A more marked deterioration is expected in the North and Center from Thursday afternoon and evening. Accumulations could surpass 100 millimeters in Liguria, high Tuscany, and western Emilia-Romagna, with intense thunderstorms possible in the Center. Temperatures will remain mild, with maximums reaching 15-16 degrees in the North, 20 in the Center, and up to 24 in the South, with values of 26 degrees and above in Sicilia. The zero-degree line on the Alps could rise to 3,000 meters.
