In a poignant moment during the recent SNL50 anniversary special, Aubrey Plaza honored her late husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, with a subtle tribute. This marked Plaza’s first public appearance as Baena’s passing on January 3rd at the age of 47.
Plaza, who had been scheduled to present at the Golden Globes shortly after Baena’s death, gracefully withdrew from the ceremony. Choosing to return to the stage of SNL, where she made her hosting debut two years prior, Plaza donned a tie-dye shirt. This motif held personal significance, as Baena had cultivated a passion for tie-dye during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Love Story Celebrated in Tie-Dye
“Jeff got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine,” Plaza shared in a 2021 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show. “So, I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pajamas that he had made for us [at the nuptials.]”
In a joint statement released following Baena’s unexpected death, Plaza and their respective families conveyed their profound grief and requested privacy during this difficult time. “This is an unimaginable tragedy,” they shared. ”We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
