Known for his truthfulness, Math Dansokho is one of those who have actively marked the political history of Senegal. His path as an opponent is that of a man free of his opinions and who prefers to emancipate himself from the demands of compromise to the point of going into exile. A man of compromise, however, firm in his positions but always open to constructive dialogue, Amath Dansokho was called to God on August 23, 2019.
A life of fighting, that’s what the emblematic president and founder of the Independence and Labor Party led. Born on January 13, 1937 in Kédougou, Amath Dansokho was very early interested in trade unionism and politics, two most appropriate ways to defend the masses. Several times imprisoned because of his convictions, the politician was forced into exile for many years under President Senghor. He thus stays in African countries and the former Eastern bloc where he considers the use of arms for the effective independence of the country.

Member of African Independence Party (AIP) in 1957, he founded the PIT in 1981 after returning to Senegal in 1977 following a general amnesty pronounced by President Senghor. A very forceful opponent of the Diouf regime, whose mismanagement he denounces, Dansokho contributes to the advent of alternation by supporting Wade, whom he will eventually leave. From his second term on, his house became the preferred meeting place for the opposition, initially grouped around the CPC, the Front Siggil Senegal, and Bennoo Siggil Senegal. His interpersonal skills will have allowed the different ideologies to come together around the essentials.
Amath Dansokho is thus one of the most prominent architects of the occurrence of the second alternation with the election of Macky Sall in 2012. Minister of State of this one, he died on July 23, 2019 leaving to posterity a journey worth remembering.
