2024-01-21 22:29:40

Yesterday, parts of Australia once once more witnessed a widespread heat wave, which the National Weather Service said increases the risk of forest fires in a season in which this risk is already high, at a time when the country is bearing the consequences of the El Niño phenomenon.

The Meteorology Department said that “extreme” heat wave warnings, which are the highest levels of danger warning, were issued for the second day for parts of the state of Western Australia. Its scope has also expanded to include areas in the state of South Australia, while “dangerous” warnings have been issued for areas in the states of Queensland and New South Wales and in the Northern Territory.

The authority warned that the temperature in two remote areas in the state of Western Australia might reach well above 40 degrees Celsius yesterday.

The highest temperature recorded in Australia was 50.7 degrees Celsius, recorded at Onslow Airport in the Pilbara on January 13, 2022.
