Australian Open Week 2: Golubic’s Journey and Svitolina’s Dominance

2024-01-20 12:16:06

The second week of the Australian Open will be written without the Swiss. The final representative of Swiss Tennis competing in Melbourne, Viktorija Golubic (WTA 85) did not achieve the expected feat. The Zurich native lost 6-2 6-3 to Elina Svitolina (23) in just 64 minutes.

Despite her will and her talent, she was quickly overwhelmed by the Ukrainian’s verve. No doubt boosted by the elimination of world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, whom she should have faced in the round of 16, Svitolina set the bar very high. Too high for Viktorija Golubic who was not able to keep the score at the start of the two sets.

Positive outcome for the Zurich resident

Apart from a few good sequences, notably the one in the second set which allowed her to get back to 3-3, the Zurich native didn’t really have the weapons to compete with Svitolina. The Ukrainian won the last six points of the match to reach the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the fourth time.

Golubic can, however, draw a positive conclusion from his week in Melbourne. Her two successes over Veronika Kudermetova and Katerina Siniakova ensured she jumped around fifteen places in the WTA rankings. And, incidentally, offer him a nice check for 145,000 francs.
