Austrian GP: FIA fines Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen after race at Spielberg

The reason is a breach of Article 12.2.1 i) of the International Sporting Code. There you can read about a “disregard of the specifications of relevant officials for the safe and proper execution of the event”.

Specifically, it was about Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen interacting with their physiotherapists or assistants after the race in parc fermé without permission, as video recordings show.

These people were in this area “without permission” and “contrary to the procedures that were published before the race,” the stewards explain.

They therefore fined Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen each €10,000, which is suspended on probation. In other words, the fine does not have to be paid unless a rule violation of the same kind occurs later in the season.

FIA sets rules for parc fermé

Should a “systematic violation of the rules” occur, the sports stewards warn of further consequences for the team members involved. These could lose their access to the Formula 1 paddock.

On Sunday morning, the world association again pointed out the correct behavior in the parc fermé. According to this, only the following people are allowed to stay there after the race: Mechanics (if necessary with cooling devices for the vehicles), officials, a camera crew with FIA approval and photographers with FIA approval. “No one else is allowed to be there at this time,” it says.

What’s more, an addendum states that “no PR people from the teams” are allowed in the parc fermé. And: “The drivers’ physiotherapists have to wait outside the cool-down room behind the podium until the award ceremony is over.”

The latter, as the sports stewards emphasized, also serves to “prevent objects from being handed over to the drivers before they have gone to the scales”.
