Discussion about pre-trial detention causes controversy in politics

It may not have been an easy year for the Climate Shakira. The dispute over the well-known activist’s pre-trial detention has overshadowed the recent weeks. The Vienna regional court ordered the Bavarian’s release after almost four days in police custody. The Vienna public prosecutor’s office wanted pretrial detention, but received instructions from the Ministry of Justice to “refrain from filing a complaint.”

The bourgeois ÖVP party raged, Lower Austria’s governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner appeared “extremely irritated” and complained about “freedom of fools”. General Secretary Christian Stocker accused the Green Justice Minister Alma Zadić of “ideologically motivated intervention”. When asked by the “Standard”, the ministry explained that it had been a decision by the specialist department and that the minister’s staff had only been “informed” about the process. Zadić then dissected Stocker on TV, calling his statements an “attack on the judiciary”.

Windl addressed Chancellor Nehammer

Curious: In order to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, Zadić wanted to deprive her ministry of precisely this influence and create a public prosecutor’s office that is free from instructions. However, the plans have not yet been implemented in the coalition with the ÖVP.

Windl also told Chancellor Karl Nehammer on ORF: “If the recommendations of the Climate Council were implemented, then we would actually be off the streets. This is also in the hands of Karl Nehammer. He should go and do some chopping and then it’ll be fine.”
