Austria’s film critics declare “Oppenheimer” the film of the year

The experts had previously chosen the big winner of the only slightly better-known Oscars, “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan, as the best film of 2023 in a secret vote.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” followed in second place.

The award for the best Austrian film went to the domestic foreign Oscar candidate “Vera” by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel. The directing duo accepted the award personally.

Nicolas Philibert, whose Berlinale winner “Auf der Adamant” was honored, can be pleased about the award for best documentary film.

And finally, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kempt Powers and Justin K. Thompson completed the winning quartet for best animated film.

The Papierene Gustl is a symbolic award that goes to Austrian film distributors. A caricature of the American silent film director Malcolm St. Clair, whose picture is shown on the “Gustl certificate”, was used as a symbolic figure.
