Author Paul Auster is dead

In March 2023, his wife stated that he had suffered from cancer. His latest novel “Baumgartner” was released last year and will be published in Swedish in May.

He has been a strong voice on the American literary scene for over 30 years and has often been described as a literary superstar.

Known for the “New York Trilogy”

The breakthrough came in the 1980s with the “New York trilogy”, when Auster went from an unknown poet to a cult author. The books “Dårskaper i Brooklyn” and “The Book of Illusions” have also been successful.

Coincidence often prominent

His writing style is reminiscent of classic noir detective stories, but instead of murder, tension is created with the help of a snarky plot. The books are realistic and chance often plays a prominent role in the story.

He was married to the writer Lydia Davis in the 70s, but since 1982 he has been married to the writer Siri Hustvedt.

Paul Auster was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1947 and graduated from Columbia University in New York in 1970.
