The recent capture of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), has revealed details about his final hideout – a lavish complex in Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexico. The operation, which involved a fierce firefight with cartel forces, underscores the lengths to which El Mencho went to secure a comfortable base of operations while evading authorities. The capture marks a significant blow to the CJNG, one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent drug cartels.
Following a brief escape from cabin number 39 at the exclusive Tapalpa Country Club, El Mencho and his security detail attempted to flee towards the mountainous terrain. This led to a confrontation at Cabañas La Loma, a residential complex that became the scene of intense fighting between the Mexican Army and CJNG gunmen, who sought to protect their leader. Despite the attempt to escape, the military successfully intercepted El Mencho, cutting off his route and taking him into custody.
The path of escape was marked by evidence of a heavy gun battle. Authorities discovered two vehicles belonging to El Mencho’s special forces incinerated along the access road, along with dozens of spent cartridges from Barrett .50 caliber, 2.23, and 7.62mm weapons, as well as grenade launcher shells. Large areas of grass were burned, and a thermos belonging to the Fuerzas Especiales Mencho (FEM) – El Mencho’s special forces – was found at the scene, according to reports from Mexico News Daily.
Forensic teams have combed the area, collecting evidence and recovering remains. A convoy of military vehicles initially secured the hillside where the confrontation took place, but withdrew upon detecting a drone, prioritizing security. The complex is located at kilometer 3 on the Tapalpa-San Gabriel highway.
A Refuge of Luxury: Inside Cabañas La Loma
Cabañas La Loma, a complex of ten luxury properties also located at kilometer 3 on the Tapalpa-San Gabriel highway, served as another hideout and recreational retreat for El Mencho, protected by his inner circle of security, the Fuerzas Especiales Mencho. Locals reportedly referred to the properties as “the cabins of love,” according to reporting from streamlinefeed.co.ke. The cabins are also reportedly available for public rental, as indicated by a sign displaying contact numbers: 3339684225 and 3414399317.
Properties number 7 and 9, situated on the highest part of the hill, stand out for their opulence. A tour of property number 9 revealed a lavishly decorated living room featuring taxidermied heads of gazelle, antelope, and zebra, a Masai shield from an African ethnic group, and a roughly 5-meter-long rug made from various animal skins. A hallway contained an altar dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe and Saint Jude Thaddeus, the saints to whom El Mencho reportedly prayed.
The cabin’s wooden ceiling is adorned with chandeliers made of deer antlers, and the terrace boasts a billiards table and a children’s play area. Authorities discovered a black barber’s cape emblazoned with the image of Oseguera Cervantes and the inscription “El Señor de los Gallos” (The Lord of the Roosters), as well as handwritten letters. One letter, in a red envelope, read, “Don’t forget me. I love you very much. Yours forever,” while another simply stated, “Tu güerita forever” (Your blonde forever). A Ford Bronco Raptor, valued at 2 million pesos, was abandoned at the property.
The remaining cabins, named Tulipanes, Margarita, and Mexicana, were reportedly used by El Mencho’s security team, where tactical clothing was found. The area remains under military guard as investigations continue.
The capture of El Mencho represents a significant victory for Mexican authorities in their ongoing fight against drug trafficking and organized crime. The discovery of his luxurious hideouts provides insight into the lifestyle of the cartel leader and the resources at his disposal. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to continue dismantling the CJNG’s infrastructure and pursuing its remaining leaders.
As authorities continue to investigate the network of support surrounding El Mencho, the full extent of the CJNG’s operations and influence remains to be seen. The coming months will be critical in assessing the long-term impact of this capture on the cartel’s activities and the security landscape in Jalisco and beyond.
