Authorities Demolish Illegal Structures at Phuket’s Freedom Beach

Heavy machinery tore through illegal concrete and timber on Sunday morning at Phuket’s Freedom Beach, where authorities knocked down unauthorized structures that had quietly carved up protected forest land.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin led the operation alongside 350 forest protection officers, local government officials, and police forces, according to Bangkok Post.

The swift takedown targeted buildings sprawling across nine rai of land within the Nakkerd Hills National Forest Reserve in Karon, as reported by The Phuket News. Authorities posted fresh demolition notices under Section 25 of the National Reserved Forest Act B.E. 2507 earlier in October after occupants ignored previous orders to clear the site.

Fraudsters had exploited ownership documents from entirely different blocks of land to fraudulently secure title deeds along the pristine coast. They then flipped these forged documents to unsuspecting buyers, charging Thais between 3 million and 5 million baht per rai.

Foreign buyers faced an even steeper price tag, shelling out roughly 16 million baht per rai for invalid deeds. Minister Suchart estimated that the sprawling illegal land sales and illicit business ventures across the beach reaped approximately 3 billion baht.

Authorities Restore Public Access to Freedom Beach

Sunday’s enforcement sweep resulted in four immediate arrests as authorities worked to restore free public access to the shore. Minister Suchart described the reclamation as a New Year gift to the Thai public, emphasizing the goal to preserve the coastline’s natural beauty.

We want Freedom beach and its world-class beauty to be a public space that children, all Thais, can enter, and conserve it as a priceless natural asset of the nation, Minister Suchart said.

Nikorn Sirarotchananon, director-general of the Royal Forest Department, noted that recovery efforts have already helped establish a recreational forest covering 41 rai. Officials ultimately aim to restore a total of 260 rai to the reserved forest ecosystem.

Next Steps for Victims and Site Management

Authorities announced plans to establish fair compensation frameworks for victims who purchased the fraudulent deeds, alongside strict witness protection measures.

Minister Suchart instructed on-site teams to guarantee completely free entry for the general public, forbidding any general admission charges. Instead, management will levy appropriate fees exclusively on foreign visitors, funneling the revenue directly into a dedicated maintenance fund for the beach.

Meanwhile, the Royal Forest Department has tasked its regional offices with calculating total demolition costs to recover expenses from the responsible parties under the law.
