Great first in Brussels. Following a technical micmac of motion and amendment, Ecolo finally succeeded in obtaining the principle of authorizing the wearing of the veil in the municipal administration of Anderlecht. It will therefore be the first French-speaking municipality to take the plunge, following in the footsteps of the Flemish municipalities of Mechelen and Ghent.
“We are very happy to see that the debate has moved forward at the initiative of Ecolo,” rejoices co-president Rajae Maouane on Thursday evening. However, she regrets “the missed opportunity to operationalize the conclusions even more quickly”.
The Ecolo text set an implementation date and made it possible to land before 2024. The motion retained, that of the PS, refers in some way to the Brussels Region.

“We are nevertheless satisfied to be moving in the right direction. I am happy to have been able to spark the debate and to have taken a step towards greater inclusion of people who carry a conviction.”
Rajae Maouane does not see this moment as a breach in the wall of secularism which would open the way to a generalization of authorizations for the wearing of the veil in other municipalities.
“We are moving forward where there are working groups. This is the case in Anderlecht. We are working to find consensus. Our objective remains to enable a certain number of women to be able to work.”
