GRR Martin vs OpenAI: the battle of authors against AI

The Authors Guild partners with renowned writers such as George RR Martin, the father of Games of Thrones, or the novelist Jodi Picoult, to sue OpenAI. They accuse the company of using their works, without permission or financial compensation, to train ChatGPT. AIs like ChatGPT are trained on corpora of online texts, some of which come from pirate sites. Additionally, these tools imitate writers’ style and threaten the integrity of their work. Three legal proceedings have already been opened against OpenAI in 2023. Faced with what Mary Rasenberger, CEO of the Authors Guild, describes as “large-scale theft”, Joe Biden suggested measures to distinguish generated works from originals. The European Union, for its part, is working on an AI Act to protect copyright.
