Automated post-processing is indispensable for more cost-effective AM

2023-04-24 16:48:17

The further additive manufacturing moves towards series production, the more important the processes following the actual 3D printing become. So says Daniel Hund, Marketing Manager of Rösler Oberflächentechnik GmbH. He leads the Post-Processing and Quality Assurance forum at Rapid.Tech 3D 2023.

One of the speakers on this forum is Klaus Stadlmann. The Austrian is the founder of Genera Printer in Vienna, manufacturer of industrial DLP 3D printers. Precisely because he hates wearing gloves, he started thinking regarding the DLP printing process a few years ago. This ultimately led to the current Genera DLP printers, in which the printer and post-processing unit are connected.

The Genera G2 and A2 DLP printers with the F2, the post-processing unit. With this, Genera Printers is building an automated production line for DLP printing.

Fully automated production

Genera Printer builds the G2 and F2 as a complete production system. With an innovative shuttle system, the batch with the 3D printed products is automatically moved to the F2 unit, the post-processing unit. With this, Genera has developed a DLP system that is easy to integrate into a standard production environment and that allows 3D printing to continue around the clock. Klaus Stadlmann is coming to Erfurt this year as a speaker at the new Post-Processing & Quality Assurance trade forum. His topic is “Thinking through AM series production – decentralized, fully automated production with Genera systems”.

Man-poor concepts badly needed

This Genera concept (distributed in the Benelux by Seido Systems) is actually exactly what many companies expect from additive manufacturing systems: low-man production around the clock. “The further additive manufacturing moves towards series production, the more important the processes following the actual 3D printing become. The manual removal of support structures or powder residues and the secondary, usually manual, finishing of the parts surfaces costs time and money and does not necessarily involve the best working conditions. Automated printing and post-processing solutions, including in-line testing, are needed throughout the process to make additive manufacturing more cost-effective and ensure that components are fully functional and of reproducible quality,” says Daniel Hund from Rösler Oberflächentechnik. During the conference, he will chair the Post-Processing and Quality Assurance Forum, which will discuss this challenge and current and future solutions.

Other speakers

prof. Dr. Christian Seidel from Fraunhofer IGCV will give an overview of the latest developments in post-processing and quality assurance. It covers a wide range of technologies and industries. His exploration of high-tech applications, from printing equipment to medical technology, will highlight the results that can be achieved by combining additive manufacturing with compatible post-processing or process monitoring technology. present material on a polyamide 12 sintered material in selective laser sintering. Florian Künne, General Manager for the German-speaking and Asian regions at the US company Post Process, will talk regarding automated post-processing solutions in AM. Brian Crotty, Business Development Manager at rpm rapid product manufacturing in Helmstedt, will demonstrate how the company is bringing serial applications to end-users on the market using a bicycle computer holder. Peter Finger, Project Manager AM at Oerlikon AM Europe, will discuss the challenges and successes in the post-processing of large RF antenna sections.

Rapid.Tech3D will take place from 9 – 11 May at Messe Erfurt. More information regarding the extensive AM conference and the fair can be found here.
