The university landscape is not boring. New subjects and courses are in the starting blocks at Austria’s universities and technical colleges.

“May makes everything new”, says a well-known folk song: “Autumn makes a lot new” applies to Austria’s university landscape – because in this case it is the time of new beginnings and departures. Something’s happening: new courses, revised curricula, newly launched courses – a brief all-round view of what’s new for the coming autumn and beyond.

Course “Supervision, Coaching, Mediation” at the University of Salzburg

The Paris Lodron University of Salzburg describes its latest creation, the course “Supervision, Coaching, Mediation”, which will start next autumn, as “unique”. This is unique because there is no comparable offer in Austria and Germany that combines all three consulting formats in one training course. From the point of view of head Eva Traut-Mattausch, the course has various plus points: “This training concept is advantageous for the participants because they score with a broader portfolio on the consulting market and can react more flexibly to the concerns of clients and companies.” The three areas would complement each other perfectly: “For example, the knowledge and skills from the mediation part are beneficial for coaching a manager who is seeking advice because of a team conflict.”

The course is aimed at people who work as supervisors, coaches or mediators in commercial, educational, health or social companies and who want to work with individuals or teams to solve problems. “In addition to teaching theoretical content, the participants are supported in dealing with their own experiences and behavior, so that they can reflect on the dynamics of professional conflict behavior from a distanced position and control change processes.” “Supervision, Coaching, Mediation” runs seven semesters part-time and ends with a “Master of Science (Continuing Education)”. In this case, the cost factor plays a role – the course fee is 18,500 euros.

New course “Cyber Security” at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences

The Salzburg University of Applied Sciences is currently planning a new course called “Cyber Security” – subject to the associated approvals, the master’s course should start next year. What made you decide to study internet security? “Practically every company is currently looking for experts in cybersecurity. Our answer is a new specialized course,” says Dominik Engel, Managing Director of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.

How can one imagine the content? The practical simulation of security incidents on the Internet is a major focus of the training, network security, norms and standards as well as communication are also on the curriculum. The course was developed with companies such as Palfinger, KPMG and Conova: “Close cooperation with companies is essential. And for the students, a secure top job after graduation is one of the decisive factors when choosing a course,” Engel is certain. A bachelor’s degree in IT is required for admission. The first courses for specialization will be offered from autumn 2023 in the existing IT course “Master Information Technology and System Management”, with the new course finally starting in the winter semester 2024/25. You can register for this from November of this year.

Update at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences: Digitization, climate protection and sustainability

Digitization, climate protection and sustainability are areas that are included in the new curriculum of the bachelor’s degree in “Health and Care Management” at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. “Due to the increasing demands and necessities of the management area in the healthcare sector, topics such as climate change, sustainability and digitization in the context of health will be taught from the winter semester 2023/24,” explains course director Klaus Wettl.

New electives and projects should enable students to focus on their competencies, interests and skills – at the same time these should be brought into line with market requirements. Wettl: “Political and financial framework conditions as well as scarce resources are moving the occupational profiles of health management more and more to the fore. Students learn how to deal with these challenges.”

News from Vienna: Master in European Economic Policy

The BFI Vienna University of Applied Sciences has teamed up with the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin) and created a joint master’s degree in European economic policy. The duration is four semesters (full-time), the new course will start for the first time in the winter semester 2023/24.

The Austrian students spend a semester at the HTW Berlin and vice versa. Finally, the graduates receive a degree from both universities. “To give our students a sharper view of the opportunities that arise in a networked international community was and is a central concern of the BFI Vienna University of Applied Sciences,” explains Managing Director Eva Schiessl-Foggensteiner. The international course focuses on the areas of economics and political science, with a focus on European integration.
