Avalanche kills three skiers at ski resort 2024-04-14 23:51:25

The victims were members of a 17-person climbing group, accompanied by four Austrian guides.

The team was heading to a mountain refuge at about 2,500 meters above sea level when the avalanche, which was about 80 meters wide, hit on Thursday morning.

It swept away four members of the group, two of whom were dead when rescuers found them. The other two were found injured – one was taken to hospital by helicopter and the other remained on the mountain. The skier who remained on the mountain died, a police spokesman later said.

The Dutch foreign ministry said the country’s embassy in Vienna is investigating exactly what happened and is ready to provide assistance if needed.

The avalanche warning level in the Tirol province, where Solden is located, was “moderate”, the second on a five-point scale, but experts had warned skiers to be careful.
