Avian flu: two new outbreaks detected in the Landes

2023-07-13 16:47:00

Slaughterings were carried out on Wednesday in the two farms of Saint-Yaguen and Maylis to avoid a spread to other farms, in an area of ”very high density” with “breeding poultry essential to the sectors”, specifies the prefecture in a communicated.

On Wednesday, the level of risk of avian flu had been lowered from “moderate” to “negligible”, under an order dated July 7, which referred to “the absence of seasonal migration” of wild birds and ” stabilization of the epidemiological situation in the wild avifauna of neighboring countries”.

These two Landes cases are in addition to the only outbreak known since the beginning of June, detected on June 30 in Pas-de-Calais.

“Epidemiological investigations have been initiated to identify the possible causes of the simultaneous appearance of these two outbreaks”, adds the prefecture.

Vaccination campaign in October

During the 2022-23 season, around ten million poultry were slaughtered, according to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture published at the end of June.

A vaccination campaign, eagerly awaited by breeders, is due to start in October, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, which has chosen a German laboratory, Boehringer Ingelheim, to provide it with up to 80 million doses. Each animal will receive two doses.

At the same time, the European health authority Efsa recommended Thursday to strengthen the monitoring of possible contamination of cats and dogs by avian flu in areas where the virus circulates, following 24 cats tested positive in Poland.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday expressed concern that the increase in cases of bird flu in mammals would help the virus to spread “more easily” to humans.
