Swiss wants 11% clean kerosene by 2030
Swiss director Dieter Vranckx wants the airline to be “completely climate neutral” by 2050.
The airline Swiss wants to fly partly with solar kerosene from next year. “Our goal is that by 2030, 11% of the kerosene we need will come from renewable sources,” says Swiss director Dieter Vranckx.
The amount of solar fuel for the next two years will still remain low, however, tempers Dieter Vranckx in an interview broadcast on Sunday by the Sunday newspaper. Swiss cannot switch to sustainably sourced kerosene any faster because of low production capacity and price, he adds.
A cost for passengers
A company spun off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), Synhelio, produces the fuel for Swiss. “It’s just not realistic to go faster,” said the boss of the airline. Swiss has again set itself the goal of halving its CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to the period preceding the Covid-19 pandemic, continues Dieter Vranckx.
“In 2050, we want to be completely climate neutral”. But this will have a cost, also for passengers, he warns. Air travel will become a little more expensive, he believes.
