At the end of a new meeting of the crisis unit of the Henri-Duffaut hospital in Avignon, Friday evening January 6, it was decided to activate the first level of the white plan. Concretely, this implies that staff are informed of a possible contribution if the situation justifies it (for the moment there has been no recall) and the provision of additional beds to cope with unusual requests for staff. ‘hospitalization.
Crisis units have been organized twice a week since November. They bring together all the department heads, the presidency of the establishment medical commission (CME), the functional departments and the general management.
One hundred hospitalizations due to COVID
Due to the various winter illnesses – flu, bronchitis and to a lesser degree Covid (even if currently 100 patients are affected at the Avignon hospital) – saturation is current in medicine, but not in surgery. It is adults who are affected and not children. “We have learned lessons from last year regarding the treatment of bronchiolitis. If we have reached 180 child crossings in recent weeks during the epidemic, where usually there is an average of 90 to 100 crossings, everything has been managed. Especially since the epidemic arrived when we expected it”, explains Pierre Pinzelli, director of the Avignon public care establishment.
For adults therefore, with currently a complete care unit, i.e. 30 beds, occupied by cases of severe flu; the reception capacity will be expanded by being able to resort, which the first level of the white plan allows, to possible deprogramming of certain medical appointments in order to absorb current hospitalizations.
The activation of the white plan is linked to the conjunction of several events. In addition to the classic winter viruses, there is Covid, cases of severe flu, an average hospitalization rate in the emergency room longer than usual and a postponement of activity to the hospital center due to the closure during this holiday period of many city offices or private establishments. “Medical centers fulfill their role perfectly”, however, underlines director Pierre Pinzelli, while specifying that better anticipation of the holiday period would be desirable in the future between the different health stakeholders in the region.
“As is always the case, the hospital’s healthcare staff demonstrate very strong involvement. Once again, hospital workers are making the effort. The public hospital will always meet patients’ expectations because it is our place and our role”, also wishes to indicate the director.

After a crisis unit this Saturday morning, which confirmed the merits of the measures taken with the activation of level 1 of the white plan, the hospital’s health staff will meet again on Monday January 8, at the beginning of the afternoon, to consider the rest of the system.
In these periods of tension, we are obviously reminded of the need to only resort to emergencies when justified, “to be friendly to emergency personnel” (after the first diagnosis, waiting times depending on the pathologies are on average 3 hours). A message has also been sent, in relation to the flu epidemic, to say that vaccination is still relevant.
