An AvtoVAZ representative explained how the WLY CVT18 variator is protected from overheating.
Overheating of the variator can occur in the case of prolonged heavy load on the transmission, for example, slipping in the sand, driving in the mountains with a trailer, etc. On “AvtoVAZ“could not overheat the variator LADA Vesta during endurance tests in Sochi and other Russian cities. It was only possible to achieve transmission overheating during bench tests.
According to the project director LADA Vesta Oleg Grunenkova, experts were unable to reproduce overheating conditions in severe conditions, for example, in the mountains, with a trailer and at high temperatures. The only thing that was able to be tested in such modes was only in bench tests, when huge overloads were artificially created.
He also noted that despite the fact that the variator heat exchanger WLY CVT18 slightly less than the previous version, but calculations and tests have shown that its efficiency is very good.
The Chinese variator has an increased volume of transmission oil (7.2 liters) with a low temperature threshold (-40 “C). Due to this, we have a good operating range of oil temperature in the variator from -40 to +120 degrees.
Variable speed drive WLY CVT18 has 3 stages of protection against oil overheating:
If the transmission oil temperature is above 125 degrees — electronics reduce engine speed and do not allow speeds to exceed 3500 rpm.
If the temperature is between 125 and 131 degrees — an indicator lights up on the dashboard, indicating that it is necessary to reduce the load on the variator. This does not mean that the gearbox has gone into the block or that it has overheated. This is just a warning that it works in quite serious modes.
Temperature over 135 degrees — electronics limit the torque to 50 Nm and do not allow overloading the gearbox.
