“At first I was left out as I had never voiced for anyone other than myself. But I ended up voicing Aisha Rauthar myself.”

SumActress Pauly Valsan is happy to have won the Sthana film award for the second time. One room light in 2017, E.Ma.Yau. Pauli first won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in the films. However, this time the award for the best dubbing artist has been received through the film ‘Saudi Vellakka’. Another feature is that this was Pauli’s first film dubbed for other than his own character.

Devi Verma, who portrayed the character of Ayesha Rauthar, voiced by Pauli, also won the Best Character Artist award. Pauly was also considered for the same award for his performance in the film ‘Appan’. However, in the final round, the draw fell in favor of Devi Verma. Paulichechi says that he is not disappointed and is happy to have been recognized in the field of dubbing for the first time. Pauli Valsan opens up about the award, film and life:

I came to dubbing unexpectedly

86-year-old Devi Verma played the role of Aisha Rauthar in Saudi Vellaka. Gracie, a native of Kochi, was first found to voice the character. But after the unexpected death of Gracie, he had to meet someone else. Even though dubbing was tried by many people, none of it was satisfactory to the crew of the film. That’s how the opportunity comes to me. At first I was put off because I had never done a voice for anyone other than myself. But in the end, I myself voiced the character Aisha Rauthar.

Late to the cinema?

Theater has been my life for more than four decades. There are many years in which the play was performed for more than three hundred days. The truth is that after the play, there was no time for anything else. Moreover, there was doubt that I would get a place in the film where there are many good artists like Lalitachechi and Kaviyur Ponnammachechi to play mother roles.

To ‘Annan Thambi’

Screenwriter Benny P. I have known Nayarambalam for years. Benny’s loving insistence leads to the film ‘Annan Thambi’. There is only one scene. There is little dialogue. He hesitated at first but decided to go when he found out that Sean was with Mammooka.

It is the scene where the dialogue is given to Mammooka. But because of the reaction, Mammooka did not come while speaking the dialogue. But after hearing my dialogue, the actor asked Siddique who Mammooka was. Siddique is my countryman. ‘That’s what we shared. On hearing Siddique’s reply, Mammooka herself came to the scene. Even though there was only that one scene, that scene and I were noticed.

The award is also with Mammooka

I had done a play with Mammooka many years ago, though it was my first time in cinema. In 1975 when he was studying in college. When told about this, Mammooka said that he still has a group photo taken that day. He has a great connection with the Vip of that time. He used to come there regularly with his college friends. There is such an affinity with him. Now when he gets this award he is more happy that he is the best actor.

I was rowdy when I was young!

My grandfather was a fisherman. I was the eldest child in a family of only daughters. So he grew up taking that responsibility from a young age. I used to be a curmudgeon who answered back no matter what anyone said. Many people used to say to the father that ‘what if he doesn’t have sons.. Johnny Chetan has Pauli’.

Even when I come late at night after the play, I walk home alone. He will have a stick, a knife and a torch in his hand. Back then there was nothing to be afraid of near home like today. But I was really rowdy. I have given a conviction that no matter what happens to me, it will not happen. Everything was done with such care. But the knife and stick are a precaution.

Family and art

I got married at the age of 18 due to love. My husband’s lack of regular income made me stay active in drama. Balancing family and art was difficult. A lot of trouble. At that time prayer was the only recourse. It was suggested that.

I have always loved mother roles

I used to love mother roles in the early days of the drama. At that time, none of the youngsters liked to act as mothers. But I would ask for such roles. At the age of nineteen, I played Thilakan Chetan’s 75-year-old wife. Amma characters have the potential to make you laugh and cry. It was fascinating that it was.
