Amazon Web Services launched a student rewards program on the AWS Builder Center, opened a new Local Zone in Las Vegas, and expanded Amazon Bedrock with new model and payment options during the week of August 24, 2026, according to official platform updates.
Back-to-School Cloud Credits and the Builder Center Rollout
Higher education students can now unlock financial incentives and training resources through the newly introduced Student Rewards program on the AWS Builder Center. Verified students aged 18 and older who complete profile requirements gain 12 months of premium access to AWS Skill Builder, a repository containing more than 900 courses, hands-on labs, game-based learning modules, and certification exam preparation resources.
The incentive structure ties direct platform engagement to tangible financial rewards. Students earn digital badges by publishing articles, leaving comments, and maintaining activity on the Builder Center platform. Reaching seven badges yields $10 in AWS Credits. Hitting 14 badges secures an additional $20 in credits. Securing 21 badges unlocks a voucher for an AWS Foundational Certification exam, valued at $100.
According to platform announcements, this initiative represents a resource commitment exceeding $500 million for the back-to-school season. For enterprise engineering teams, the program broadens the pool of early-career applicants who bring hands-on cloud architecture and AI experience to their first roles.
Infrastructure Expansion in Las Vegas and London
Geographic footprint expansion remained a core focus, marked by the launch of a new AWS Local Zone in Las Vegas. The site brings low-latency compute and storage resources directly into the metropolitan area. The facility supports Amazon EC2 C7i, M7i, R7i, and C8gn instances alongside Amazon EBS, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, Application Load Balancer, and AWS Direct Connect.
Local Zones reduce network latency for workloads requiring rapid round-trip response times, such as interactive media, local data-processing pipelines, and virtual desktops. AWS now operates Local Zones across more than 30 metropolitan areas.
Across the Atlantic, the Europe (London) Region gained its fourth Availability Zone. This new zone delivers advanced machine learning and AI capacity featuring Trn3 and P6 accelerated instances alongside general-purpose compute, giving European organizations expanded resilience and isolated infrastructure for high-availability architectures.
Batch Instance Termination
Operational efficiency received a boost with updates to Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling. Operators can now pass up to 100 instance IDs in a single `TerminateInstanceInAutoScalingGroup` API call. This batch capability cuts down API traffic during scale-down operations for temporary, high-density workloads like transient AI and machine learning training jobs, event-driven architectures, and large container clusters.
