Axel Witsel became, in his “older” days, a central defender. But he might at least temporarily regain his midfield position.
Since his arrival at Atlético Madrid, Axel Witsel (34 years old) has played twice as many matches as a central defender than as a defensive midfielder. A trend which began at the end of the course at Borussia Dortmund, but from which Diego Simeone managed to make the most of. This season, the former Red Devil is a full-fledged central defender.
But while Atlético deplores several absences, Witsel might well move up a notch on Simeone’s chessboard. Reinildo, left side of Colchoneros, will play the CAN with Mozambique. Two other players, Thomas Lemar and Pablo Barrios, are injured.
Brand reports that this Friday, during training, Diego Simeone tried to replace Axel Witsel in midfield, alongside Koke and Rodrigo De Paul. Something to bring back good memories to all Red Devils supporters.
