Azerbaijan applied to join BRICS a day after Putin’s visit

Azerbaijan has officially submitted an application to join the BRICS group of developing countries.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Aykhan Hajizade, announced this on August 20, a day after the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Baku.

For more than ten years, the bloc included only five countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and the Republic of South Africa. But recently it has expanded significantly.

In January, BRICS was joined by Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS in July, a decision China welcomed.
