The Azimut Magellano 27M superyacht made its debut in September 2026, introducing a third-generation long-range cruiser designed by Michele De Lucchi and AMDL Circle, featuring a dual-mode hull, an exterior by Jarkko Jämsén, and a sea-facing loggia that merges domestic architecture with maritime adventure.
The Evolution of the “SUV of the Seas”
Azimut originally launched the Magellano range in 2009. According to Giovanna Vitelli, chair of Azimut Benetti, the line was imagined as an “SUV of the seas,” balancing comfort, safety, distance, and speed. Entering the market in September 2026, the third-generation Magellano 27M maintains its characteristic dual-mode hull, enabling dining and relaxing at both slow and fast cruising speeds.
The exterior design was distilled to “just a few lines” by Finnish yacht designer Jarkko Jämsén, according to Wallpaper*. This minimalist approach preserves the vessel’s identity as a comfortable long-range cruiser designed for modern exploration.
Architectural Craftsmanship and Material Engineering
Michele De Lucchi, working alongside Davide Angeli under AMDL Circle, brought a distinct architectural perspective to the water. De Lucchi has collaborated with Azimut for more than ten years on land projects, including designing the company’s headquarters. For the Magellano 27M, AMDL Circle engineered a sinuous wooden interior that flows around expansive glazing and connects to a main deck shaded by a teak, fan-shaped brise-soleil.
The interior is crafted predominantly of light oak wood. De Lucchi selected this material for its transformational patina, which evolves with each journey. The spatial geometry is illuminated by travertine, metal, and integrated lamps such as the Metafisica and Tolomeo. Movement throughout the vessel is guided by advanced woodworking techniques, including walnut detailing, subtle ribbing, flame-treatments, and hand-chiselled Japanese “Naguri” finishes.
Cross-Cultural Design Infusions
Drawing further influence from Japan, a wall in the primary bedroom is upholstered in Hosoo fabric that echoes the growth rings of a tree trunk. This material is handwoven on a traditional loom at the Kyoto company founded in 1688.
“For us Italians, Japan is also the other side of the moon, not only because it is on the other side of the world, but because it approaches working with the hands with the same emotional intensity, yet in a completely opposite way,” De Lucchi stated, emphasizing the cultural synthesis embedded in the vessel. “When different cultures and skills meet, things emerge that neither could have created alone.”
Vitelli noted that De Lucchi’s background in architecture and exploring new limits shaped the project. “This interior is about atmosphere, rather than ornament,” she explained.
