The SPÖ confirmed Andreas Babler as its chairman at a party conference in Graz on Saturday. The Traiskirchen Mayor and Federal Councilor is the only candidate standing for election. Babler rose to the top of the party in a duel with Hans Peter Doskozil in June and will now strive to achieve a better result than Pamela Rendi-Wagner when she last took office. It reached 75.3 percent two years ago.

In addition to the election of the chairman, the committees will also be redesignated, with particular interest in the performance of the representatives of the controversial state organizations Vienna and Burgenland. However, the respective state leaders Michael Ludwig and Hans Peter Doskozil themselves are neither running for the presidency nor for the board. Babler will receive a total of eight deputies, including Carinthia’s Governor Peter Kaiser and the Second President of the National Council Doris Bures.

In terms of content, twelve key proposals will be debated and voted on. The issue that attracted the most attention in advance was to make combating inflation a constitutional provision. The reduction in working hours is only required as a pilot project. The new statute, which the Viennese party in particular is skeptical regarding, provides for a runoff election for the party leadership in the future if more than one person applies.

Around 600 delegates and around 400 guests are expected at the Graz trade fair. The leadership of the Burgenland state party, which has apologized for commitments on the occasion of the state holiday, will be missing. The party conference will only conclude on Sunday with, among other things, the vote on the list of candidates for the EU elections.
