Two childcare workers left a 10-month-old baby alone in a Brussels nursery at the end of last November, the Brussels prosecutor’s office said, confirming information from La Capitale.
“The baby’s parents presented themselves at the police station in the Brussels North zone on November 29, following finding themselves in front of a closed nursery when they came to pick up their child,” said Yasmina Vanoverschelde, spokesperson for the parquet. “The mother would have dropped off her child at the Saint-Josse-ten-Noode crèche that morning and when she came to pick him up, around 5 p.m., the crèche door was closed and no member of staff might be reached” . The police then went to the scene with one of the parents. A manager from the nursery was finally able to be contacted and also went to the scene.
“Forgot to check the rooms”
“The child was found, in good health, within the establishment,” continued the spokesperson for the prosecution. “The Brussels public prosecutor’s office has been informed and is currently carrying out an investigation to try to understand the circumstances of the incident.” The case concerns a daycare center attached to the non-profit organization “La maison rue verte”. the president of the association, Paul Palsterman, spoke of a “regrettable accident” caused by the negligence of the two babysitters, to La Capitale and Bruzz.
“When all the children are picked up by their parents, the childcare workers are authorized to close early,” he explained. “In this case, they closed the nursery before 5:30 p.m., forgetting to check each of the rooms.”
In the meantime, both at the board of directors of the non-profit organization and at a meeting including all staff, it was decided to carry out a re-examination of all the procedures to follow when closing the crèche. The two childcare workers would have received a warning without any other sanction being taken. One of them has worked at the crèche for 10 years and has always done excellent work, according to the association.
