It wasn’t long ago that Josef Muchitsch wanted one thing above all: for there to finally be peace in the SPÖ. That was last November, Andreas Babler was elected red capo for the second time in a very short time at a party conference in Graz – this time without the Excel fiasco. Muchitsch, the powerful trade unionist with Styrian roots, took Babler’s recent freestyle as an opportunity to proclaim the end of the constant rebellions within the Social Democrats. Arguments, Muchitsch said, should – if at all – only be fought within the party. The SPÖ – at least briefly. Now it is Muchitsch of all people who is stabbing his party leader in the back.
