The 2023 edition of the annual conference of the European Society for Veterinary Epidemiology (SVEPM) was held from March 22 to 24, 2023 at the Pierre Baudis Congress Center in Toulouse.
After 13 editions outside France, the event was organized this year by the Epidesa team of UMR IHAP and was a great success. It brought together for the first time 238 researchers from 31 different countries.
The epidemiology and modeling of infectious diseases are subjects of major importance for animal health. During this congress, predictive approaches to health (emergency modeling and forecasting), the interface between animal health, public health and ecosystem health (“One Health”), or the link between research and risk management (economy of health, behavior of actors) were discussed.
The SVEPM began with a presentation of Dr. Marius GilbertVice-Director of the Free University of Brussels, who shared his experience of the close links between science, communication and decision-making support.
The following two days were devoted to 20 oral presentations, chosen from the 84 submitted abstracts. These speeches were made in a long and unique format for this discipline with 18 minutes of presentation followed by 7 minutes of questions.
The work of French research laboratories was well represented, with five oral presentations.
The conference ended with a presentation of the Dr. Francois Rogerwho explained how epidemiology can contribute to the development of countries in the South.
During these three days, 100 scientific posters were also exhibited, allowing a broad illustration of the thematic fields of veterinary epidemiology.

- Sebastien Lambertpost-doctoral fellow in the joint research unit ENVT-INRAE ”Host-pathogen interaction” (IHAP, Toulouse), for his work modeling the transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry farms who wins the prize for the best communication.
- Margarida de Castro Arede (Autonomous University of Barcelona), Jonas Brock (Animal Health Ireland), et Matthias Delpont (ENVT, Toulouse) who win the science poster prizes.
It was on the occasion of this congress that the Dr. Timothée Vergne of the ENVT is named junior vice-president. He will become president of the society for one year from the next edition of the conference in Uppsala, Sweden in 2024.
The SVEPM (Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine) is a non-profit learned society, bringing together scientists and specialists in the fields of epidemiology and veterinary public health. Founded in 1982, it is an unmissable scientific event which today brings together around 250 members from more than 20 countries.
