Background, missions… Who is Mercy Tembon, the Cameroonian appointed Vice-President of the World Bank?

#Other countries : Cameroonian Mercy Tembon was recently appointed Vice President and Secretary General of the World Bank. She replaces the Senegalese Diariétou Gaye.

On September 1, Mercy Tembon will officially take up her duties as the new Vice President and Secretary General of the World Bank. The Cameroonian, who had held the position of country director of the Bretton Woods institution for Bangladesh and Bhutan since July 2019, was appointed on August 18, 2022.

The one who will replace the Senegalese Diariétou Gaye, who has held both positions since June 2020, joined the World Bank in 2000 as a specialist in education issues. She subsequently held various positions of responsibility in various countries. Prior to her last position, she notably officiated as Country Director of the World Bank for the South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia), as well as for Burundi and Burkina Faso.

Previously, this holder of a PhD in economics from the University of London worked as a research officer at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, also in the United Kingdom. She has produced several publications on issues related to education, gender and economic growth.

In her new role, Mercy Tembon will be primarily responsible for ensuring the integrity of the World Bank’s governance framework. She will also be in charge of facilitating relations and dialogue between the Board of Governors, the Boards of Directors and the institution’s management team, in addition to contributing to the search for consensus among shareholders and providing support services to Boards, management and other clients.
