Bacterial infections kill four at West Island home

Four residents of a private residence for seniors (RPA) in the West Island of Montreal have died of a bacterial infection since June.

Two other elders were ill during this same period.

The Public Health Department (DRSP) of Montreal, which refused to mention which residence it was, asks doctors to be on the lookout for cases of group A streptococcus in the elderly, since the bacteria would have spread to another seniors’ residence.

“This outbreak appears to have spread to a second RPA where a case of invasive group A streptococcal infection with the same genetic profile was recently detected,” CIUSSS media relations advisor Marianne Paquette said in an email. . For the moment, the DRSP is monitoring the situation closely, and an epidemiological investigation is underway. Interventions aimed at controlling the outbreak are implemented by the RPA in collaboration with the CIUSSS and the DRSP.”

Physicians should report any case of group A streptococcus to the health department by calling 514 528-2400.
